About Dr. Joe Tafur

Physician, curandero, author, and educator, Joe’s diverse skill set and wisdom are informed through training in both modern and ancient medicine techniques. Following his formal medical training and postdoctoral research in Western medicine, Joe helped to co-found a traditional healing center in Peru, Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual, where he underwent training in Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine (TAPM) and Shipido curanderismo.

Joe is both an active advocate and practitioner of Integrative Medicine. In his acclaimed book, The Fellowship of the River: A Medical Doctor’s Exploration into Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine , Joe describes his journey with traditional healing, and advocates for its value in modern health care. He co-founded the non-profit organization Modern Spirit, where he furthers his advocacy for spiritual healing in modern medicine by using scientific research, community-building, and educational initiatives. Joe continues his medical work through the Ocotillo Center for Integrative Medicine in Arizona, and continues to lead Journeys to Latin America for those wishing to experience TAPM and Ayahuasca ceremonies. Joe is also a founding member and medicine carrier of the Church of the Eagle and Condor, a multicultural spiritual community based in Arizona

An avid educator, Joe promotes the value of combining ancient wisdom with modern science through lectures, presentations, and public speaking across conferences and medical schools. He also offers an online course, The River Course, detailing the practice, benefits, and research underlying sacred medicine. As host of the Modern Spirit Podcast, Joe speaks to a wider audience on the links between emotion, spirit, and biology through interviews with leaders in research and practice on various forms of healing.

In this next installment of Examining the Psychedelic Renaissance, Joe will discuss the groundbreaking Modern Spirit Epigenetics Project. This project offers promise to expand the legitimacy of psychedelic medicine by linking the transformative spiritual healing observed in MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD with rigorous biological findings. More broadly, this project reflects the complex network connecting biology with emotion, and underscores the value and science underlying holistic healing.
