About Spencer Hawkswell

Spencer Hawkswell is the CEO at TheraPsil, an organization which advocates for the clinical application of psilocybin. The company made history on August 4, by supporting Canada’s first successful applications to access psilocybin-assisted therapy. A watershed moment for psychedelic studies, four exemptions were granted for the use of psilocybin in end-of-life care, for the first time since the compound was outlawed in 1974.

Advancing the visionary work of Terrence McKenna and Carl Jung, Spencer is dedicated to uniting psychologists and advocates to legitimize psychedelic-assisted therapy. By initiating states of altered consciousness in a controlled manner with a therapist, Spencer hopes people can find meaning and identify solutions that enable them to live fulfilling lives. Refreshingly, he recognizes the importance of integration and accepts that psychedelics are neither a panacea or substitute for psychotherapy.  He believes to facilitate change that promotes psilocybin accessibility for compassionate care and harm reduction, effective organization and leadership is essential.

Victoria-based non-profit TheraPsil provides this direction by training doctors and therapists to administer psychedelic therapy, with a focus on experiential learning to provide insight when guiding patients through psychedelic experiences. Spencer told The Georgia Straight, “psilocybin is a tool that allows many great therapists and psychologists to do their work better…It’s not something that you just take and it does the work”.

Four months after TheraPsil supported ground-breaking applications for psilocybin exemptions, Health Canada enabled 16 doctors, nurses, therapists and social workers to use psilocybin for personal training without fear of repercussions. Its this progress that Spencer will discuss in the upcoming episode of Examining the Psychedelic Renaissance.
